Violet's first large body of water
October 19, 2011
When we were away on holidays a few weeks ago we took Violet to my favourite summer haunt, with my parents. When I was growing up we went here every summer, sometimes every day in summer, usually in the afternoons once the heat of the day had passed. The water in this river is as cold as ice, regardless of the temperature outside and the only way to get in is to jump straight in, eventually the numbness of body and brain passes. If you try to ease your way in, well, you won't get past your upper thighs. In the heat of summer there, in the tropical weather, your body craves the freezingness all day.
Sadly, we were there at the end of winter. It was a pretty nice day, t-shirt weather..but not swimming weather. We explored the shallow parts of the river and sat beside the deep pools, we found tadpoles and spiders nests, and Rob and I crossed the river to look down from the heights. I really really wanted to get in, so i waded around in shoes and stockings until my legs were past the point of numb and back to throbbing with cold. It was definitely too cold for little Violet but who knows when we'll be back, so we dipped her toes in the waters I grew up around. She was a champion, no tears or complaints. Maybe she likes the ice, just like Mummy.
